South takes down only other undefeated team
In a game featuring the only remaining undefeated teams, Fargo South came out on top of a hard fought battle over Grand Forks Red River and posted a 60-50 win over the Riders on Friday night in the Bruins gym. Both teams solid defenses made it tough for either team to get into much of a rhythm on offense, and the result was a somewhat asthetically unpleasing game, as the teams combined for 50 turnovers. But it was the Bruins who made enough offensive plays to come out on top. With starting forward Katie Felch sidelined with injury, the Bruins got another huge offensive game from junior Meghan Roehrich, who hit for 30 points, her second 30+ point effort of the season, which included a 14-15 effort from the freethrow line. Red River jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but South answered with an 11-0 run and the teams played mostly even the rest of the half. The Riders held a slim 17-16 lead with under 5 minutes to play in the opening half, but the Bruins scored the last 8 points of the half to take a 24-17 halftime lead. The Bruins kept that momentum going to start the second half as Meghan Roehrich started the half with her second three pointer of the night, then followed that up with 4 straight freethrows, and then a Jasmine Moffett basket gave South a 33-17 advantage. The Riders hung tough though, and trimmed the South lead to just 38-30 with just under 9 minutes left in the game. Erica Everson then scored on a nice catch in transition to help South keep the Riders at a distance though, and the Bruins again stretched their lead out. With just under 5 minutes left in the game, South had built a 50-33 lead. The Bruins then withstood a last run by Red River to come away with the hard fought ten point win. Uncharacteristically, South had difficulty scoring in transition for most of the night, whether it was missed layups or passes that were just slightly off, the Bruins just could not ever quite get their running game going. Joining Meghan in double figure scoring was Siri Burck, who had 12. Raquel Wellentin grabbed 12 boards to lead South. The win moves South to 7-0 overall and takes over sole possession of first place in the EDC with a 4-0 record. Next action for the Bruins is next weekend when they go across river to take on Moorhead on Friday, then travel up to Grand Forks to battle the Central Knights on Saturday.
