Second half run propels Bruins to win
Fargo South went on a 21-4 run midway through the second half to run away from the visiting Moorhead Spuds on Thursday night, and cruised to a 77-55 win. Early on it was the Miki Stephenson show, as the NDSU bound senior post from Moorhead scored the first 8 points for the Spuds en route to a game high 28 point night, and staked them to an 8-6 lead. But the game turned into the Fargo South defensive pressure against the inside game of Moorhead, and more often than not, the Bruins won that battle. The Bruins full court and half court pressure defense forced 20 first half turnover from the Spuds, and kept Moorhead from getting into rhythm offensively. After trailing 8-6, the Bruins went on a 13-2 run to take a 19-10 lead, a run which included a pair of three pointers from sharpshooter Alley Fisher, the state's top returning three point shooter. And while the Bruins seemed to be in control of the game, their inability to cash in from the freethrow line in the opening half kept the game close. The Bruins struggled at the charity stripe, hitting on only 11 of 23 first half attempts. The Spuds took advantage of that poor shooting, and a Stephenson hoop with 40 seconds in the half made it only a five point Bruin lead at 30-25, but Alley Fisher hit her third three of the half shortly before the halftime buzzer to give the Bruins a 33-25 halftime lead. In the second half, the Spuds made the first charge and cut the lead to 35-31 with 16 minutes to play, but that would be as close as the game got. Alley Fisher continued her hot shooting and made a three pointer on 3 consecutive trips down the floor to stretch the game out, even though the Spuds were scoring as well. Then Meghan Roehirch took some of the scoring load for South, as she scored on a couple of nice drives through traffic inside, and Siri Burck had a pair of tough inside hoops as well, and all of a sudden the lead had ballooned to a 71-42 score. Katie Felch also had a solid game for the Bruins in her second start, as she dropped in 13 points, while Raquel Wellentin was also steady with 5 points and a team high 7 boards. South put 4 players in double figures, led by the 23 of Alley Fisher, joined by 17 from Meghan Roehirch, 13 from Felch, and 11 from Siri Burck, who also had 10 assists and 7 steals. Alley Fisher's 6 three pointers is the 4th best all time for Fargo South. The win moves South to 3-0 on the season. Next action for the Bruins is next Tuesday when they host Devils Lake, currently ranked #5 in the state.
