Bruins knock off Deacons
Fargo South broke open a close game midway through the first half, and slowly pulled away in a 60-40 win on Friday night in the Bruin gym. Both teams battled back and forth for the opening 5 minutes of the game, which included matching three pointers from Shanley's Kaitlyn Carlson and South's Alley Fisher. With just under 13 minutes left the Deacons held a slim 10-9 lead, but that would be the last lead of the game for Shanley. An offensive putback basket by Raquel Wellentin gave the Bruins an 11-10 lead, and South used solid rebounding and steady defense to slowly pull away for the rest of the game. Meghan Roehrich continued her great scoring season, as she made a beautiful spinning layup in the half, and Katie Felch had a pair of important baseline jumpers to help the Bruins extend their lead late in the half. At halftime, the Bruins had built a 30-22 lead. In that half, the Bruins controlled the boards, as they outrebounded the Deacons 26-13, including grabbing 20 of 21 rebounds on their defensive end. Raquel Wellentin and Meghan Roehrich did most of that damage, as they combined for 13 first half rebounds. Meghan also posted 12 first half points. In the second half, the Bruins hit a double figure lead right away as Alley Fisher hit her second three pointer of the night giving South a 33-22 lead just 30 seconds into the half. The teams battled relatively even for the first part of the half, with South building a lead of 40-25 on a Jasmine Moffett hoop, but Shanley rallied to cut the lead to 43-34 with just over 8 minutes to play. The Deacons looked to have a chance to cut that lead even further, but a great defensive play by Siri Burck where she blocked what looked like a sure Deacon layup and grabbed the loose ball resulted in the Bruins going on a quick 9-1 run to put the game out of reach. Katie Felch made a pair of freethrows, then Alley Fisher stole the ensuing inbounds pass and made a great feed to Meghan Roehrich for an easy hoop. Siri Burck then rebounded the next Deacon shot and the resulting fast break led to a Roehrich three pointer, all of which came in about a 1 minute stretch. South built their biggest lead at 58-36 on another Roehrich three pointer, and South cruised to the 20 point win from there. Meghan Roehrich led the Bruins with 22 points and 10 boards. Alley Fisher was the only other Bruin in double figures with 12, while Raquel Wellentin also grabbed 10 rebounds and had 7 steals. South had a huge advantage on the boards for the game, outrebounding Shanley 51-25. The win moves the Bruins to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the EDC. South next takes on Wahpeton at 7 PM on Tuesday night.
