South gets win on senior night, defeats Eagles

The last time these teams played, Fargo Davies rolled to a 49 point victory. On Monday, senior night, the Bruins played with a ton of energy and passion, rode some hot shooting, and came away with a hard fought emotional 67-58 win in the Bruins gym. The first half was a good old fashioned shoot-out, with both teams knocking down shots. The Bruins were red hot, hitting 56% from the field including a red hot 8 for 12 from behind the three point line. Meanwhile, the Eagles hit on 45% from the field overall and also hit on 3 three-pointers as well. The teams battled back and forth early on, with the Eagles using their inside strength to take a 9-8 lead on a three point play by Jamie Larson with 14 miniutes left. But the Bruins went on a nice run after that. Emily Stroup made a basket and got fouled, and then South hit three pointers on three straight trips down the floor, two by Anna Diederich and one by Madeline Strandemo, to take a 19-11 lead with 11 minutes left. After a Davies time-out, the Eagles got right back into it though, cutting the lead to 19-17, and then took the lead at 26-24 on a three pointer by Lexi Bolstad with just over 4 minutes left in the half. But that was answered right back with an Alyssa May three pointer to give South a 27-26 lead, and the teams traded baskets the rest of the half as South took a slim 37-36 lead into halftime. South was on fire from the three point line in that opening half, hitting on 8 of 12 from downtown. To start the second half, a steal by Madeline Strandemo led to a nice layup by Bria Taber to make it 39-36. After the Eagles took a 40-39 lead, the teams traded bombs again - Diederich made a three to give South a 42-40 lead, Bolstad hit from downtown for Davies to make it 43-42, but Diederich again answered with another three to make it 45-43 with 10 minutes to play in what shaped up to be a very entertaining game for the fans. The teams battled back and forth for most of the next few minutes, with Bria Taber going to work inside for the Bruins, scoring 3 straight baskets. Anna Foss then scored on a nice pass from Diederich, and then Taber scored on a three point play to give South a 56-49 lead with just under 6 minutes left. The Eagles though weren't going to go away easy. Davies was able to get to the freethrow line, and then a basket inside by Paige Weston with just under 3 minutes left tied the game at 58-58. But the Bruins got some huge plays over the last 3 minutes. Alyssa May scored on a saving pass from Bria Taber to give South a 60-58 lead with 2 minutes left, then made a series of defensive stops on the other end. Bria Taber forced a jump ball and Madeline Strandemo came up with a huge steal with 50 seconds left. South then was able to make free throws in that last minute to seal with win, making 7 of 8 freethrows in the last 40 seconds. Anna Diederich led all scorers with 25 points, including 7 three pointers, but this was a total team effort all the way around. Bria Taber and Madeline Strandemo joined Diederich in double figures with 13 and 10 respectively. The win moves the Bruins to 4-11 in the EDC and gives them a chance to still host a play in game for the EDC tournament. Next action is Friday when the Bruins head to Devils Lake
