Bruins get a tough victory over Central

Fargo South put together 36 solid minutes of defense, rebounding, and timely shooting to come away with a very hard fought 41-34 win at home on Thursday night versus the Grand Forks Central Knights. Both teams played very tough defense as neither team was able to get many clean looks at the basket with nearly every shot being contested on both sides. The teams battled back and forth the entire first half, with neither team taking more than a 3 point lead at any time in the half. Central had the first 3 point lead at 7-4, but baskets by Madeline Strandemo and Anna Foss gave the Bruins the lead back at 8-7 at the 11 minute mark. The Knights then surged ahead 13-10, but South responded with a 6-0 run thanks to a steal and layup by 8th grader Maddie Erickson, a pull up jumper by Strandemo, and a midrange jumper by Anna Diederich off a steal and assist from Alyssa May. At halftime, the Bruins and Knights were tied at 21-21. South ran a set play to perfection to start the half with the result being a baseline jumper by Madeline Strandemo off a great pass from Bria Taber. But similar to the first half, both teams really battled hard on defense. The interior of the lane was a physical matchup, but the Bruins played well, anchored by 8th grader Emily Stroup, who battled hard inside all game long and came up with some huge rebounds down the stretch. The Bruins also relied on Madeline Strandemo on offense, as she was able to score on a number of tough drives into the lane for pull up jumpers to keep the Bruins close. Then, after trailing 30-29 with 8 minutes left, the Bruins made a number of important plays to wrestle the game away from the Knights. Allyson Friedt had a big offensive rebound that led to a pair of freethrows, Bria Taber scored on a great left handed spin drive to the basket, and Alyssa May scored on a strong move to the rim as well to give South a 38-31 lead with 2 minutes to play. A three pointer by the Knights cut the lead to 38-34 with just over a minute to play, but South ran the shot clock down on the next possession and finished off the play with a huge three pointer by Alyssa May with 30 seconds left to play to clinch the game. Strandemo led all scorers with 15 points, but it was a true team effort as everyone contributed something positive to the win. South moves to 3-11 in the EDC and travels to Shanley Friday night.
