South plays well in loss to Moorhead
Fargo South played well for most of the game, but could not come away with a win in a tough loss on Tuesday night against crosstown foe Moorhead, dropping a 61-53 game in the Bruin gym. Emily Stroup opened the scoring for the Bruins, as she grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on the putback to get South on the board first. Then Anna Diederich got hot, scoring 8 straight points on a pair of three pointers and a long two. Anna Foss scored on a nice post possession and again on an offensive rebound basket, and the Bruins had built a 16-11 lead with just under 8 minutes to play in the half. Diederich continued with the hot hand, making back to back three pointers again to push the lead out to 22-16 with 4 minutes to go before half. But the Bruins couldn't hold the lead to halftime. A series of turnovers right before halftime allowed the Spuds to hit the lockerroom with a 29-27 lead. In the second half, the Spuds scored the first 4 points thanks in part to 4 Bruin turnovers, and South trailed 33-27 with 15 minutes to go. But the Bruins fought the whole half to stay in the game. Every time Moorhead threatened to extend their lead, South answered with a big basket. Alyssa May, Anna Diederich, and Madeline Strandemo all connected on three trips up the court, and with 9 minutes to play, South trailed just 39-37. The Spuds looked to take control after that, with a three point play giving them a 44-37 lead, but the Bruins answered with a three pointer from Alyssa May to keep the game close at 44-40. Trailing 50-44 with 4 minutes left, the Bruins made another charge, with a Strandemo freethrow making it 50-45, then Alyssa May hit Bria Taber on a nice cut to the basket for a basket and foul, and after the freethrow, South trailed just 50-48 with just over 3 minutes to play. But the Bruins could not quite finish the comeback attempt. The Spuds hit a three pointer right as the shot clock was winding down on the next trip, then made 2 freethrows after the Bruins missed an inside shot, and just like that the lead was back to 55-48. South had one last chance though. Madeline Strandemo scored on a pull up jumper to make it 55-50 with 100 seconds to play. Playing the shot clock, the Bruins forced a tough shot by the Spuds that missed, but instead of controlling the board with a chance to cut the lead to 2 or 3, the Spuds grabbed the offensive rebound and scored on the putback to make it 57-50 and that was the final nail for the Bruins. Anna Diederich scored 20 for South. The loss drops South to 1-9 on the year. Next action for the Bruins is Friday when they host Devils Lake.
