A few tough stretches hurt Bruins

Fargo South played better for longer time frames against Devils Lake on Friday night, but a couple of runs by the Firebirds allowed Devils Lake to pull away for a 72-44 win. South played tough over the opening 10 minutes of the game as the two teams battled back and forth. A deep three pointer and transition basket by Adie Wagner was followed up by a backdoor hoop by Anna Brakke, and the Bruins and Firebirds were tied at 17-17 with just over 8 minutes to go before halftime. However, the Firebirds then went on an 13-2 run, helped in large part by a series of Bruin turnovers and inability to control their defensive boards. Those 2 issues have been an ongoing problem for South so far this season, something that will have to get better for the Bruins to stay in games. At halftime, South had 17 turnovers and had given up 15 offensive rebounds. Despite those numbers, a basket by Kierstenn Aguilar shortly before half made it a 34-22 Firebird lead at halftime. South also stayed in the game for the opening few minutes of the second half as well. Brooklyn Klein's three pointer made it a 39-29 game with just over 14 minutes to play. The bad news for South though was Devils Lake then began to crash the offensive boards again. There was an 8 minute stretch where it seemed as though the Firebirds just shot the ball until they scored, and that 10 point lead got stretched out to 20, ending any chance for a Bruin win on this night. The young Bruins will keep trying to improve on things game by game. Their very difficult early season schedule continues as they host undefeated Red River on Tuesday night.
