Ice cold shooting in the first half, coupled with a late game dry spell was the difference between a win and a loss on Saturday night as the Bruins fell 46-37 to Grand Forks Central in the Bruin gym. Despite playing well on both ends of the floor, a 13% shooting effort led to a 24-11 halftime deficit for South. However, that cold shooting was one of the few things that weren't working for South in the opening half. The Bruins played their defensive gameplan well, handled the defensive pressure of the Knights, and did a great job of controlling their defensive rebounding, something that has been an issue all season. In the opening half, the Bruins only surrendered 4 offensive rebounds, and had only 9 turnovers. That effort kept South in the game, despite their difficult time scoring. The Bruins missed 8 shots from inside of 3 feet, which led to the 13 point halftime deficit. However, that would turn around for quite a bit of the second half. Senior Kierstenn Aguilar got things started for South by scoring on a driving layup, then had a steal and coast to coast layup and drew the foul for a three point play to kick start the Bruin offense. Kierstenn then dished out a number of assists as 7th grader Adie Wagner hit a pair of three pointers, the second of which gave South a 26-24 lead with 13 minutes to go, and that was followed up shortly after by a three from 8th grader Emmerie Beyer, making it 29-24 and capped an 18-0 run to start the second half. After a Knight basket cut the lead to 29-26, Adie Wagner hit her third three of the half to give South a 32-26 lead with 10 minutes to go in the game. However, the Bruins then started to get themselves into foul trouble and Central was able to get to the line to chip away at the lead. Five straight freethrows cut the lead to 32-31 before Anna Brakke scored on a nice baseline drive to make it 34-31 South with 7 minutes to go. Unfortunately for South though, that would be their last basket of the game. South struggled to put the ball in the basket over the last 7 minutes while the Knights kept getting to the freethrow line, but also had a pair of key steals and baskets to retake the lead. South was still alive though as Kierstenn Aguilar made a pair of freethrows to make it a 41-36 game with 2 minutes to go, but that's as close as the Bruins would get. Adie Wagner and Kierstenn Aguilar each had 12 points for South, and Anna Brakke, Beyer, and Aguilar each pulled down 7 boards. Next action for South is Tuesday when they host Valley City.
