Turnovers plague Bruins in loss to Red River

South fought off a 19-0 run in the opening half by Red River, cut the lead to 7 after halftime, but in the end, South suffered too many turnovers to hang around late in the game and dropped a 77-43 decision to undefeated Grand Forks Red River on Tuesday night. Early on, South handled themselves well and battled to a 7-7 with just under 13 minutes to go as they controlled the tempo of the game for the opening 5 minutes. However the Riders then cashed in on Bruin turnovers and also hit the offensive rebounds, nailing back to back to back three pointers, all off of second chance opportunites as part of a 19-0 run that pushed the lead to 26-7with 7:30 left to play in the half. But in a sign of a possibly maturing team, the Bruins didn't let things go sideways on them at that point. The Bruins fought back to stay in the game. A nice pass from Adie Wagner to Emmerie Beyer against the Rider full court press broke the streak, and also opened the lid for Beyer from the field. Emmerie hit 3 threes over the next few minutes, and Anna Brakke scored on nice pass from Kierstenn Aguilar, and just like that, the Bruins had cut the lead to 32-22 and had a pair of shots just spin out right before the halftime buzzer. Adie Wagner then knocked down a three pointer to start the second half, and the Bruins had trimmed the lead to 32-25 and later kept it close as Anna Brakke scored on a driving shot to make it 34-27 with 16 minutes to go in the game. Unfortunately, the turnover bug then hit the Bruins again as the Riders rattled off 19 of the next 22 points scored and pushed the lead out to 53-30, and this time South couldn't mount another rally to get back in the game. The teams played roughly even from that point on until the later moments of the game, and the Riders cruised to the final score. Emmerie Beyer led South with 19 points on the night.
