Bruins fall short vs Spartans

Fargo South put together a strong first half, but had a tough time scoring in the second, and the result was a 49-38 loss against the Fargo North Spartans. The Bruins had a nice start to the game as all 5 players scored in the Bruins first 11 points. Adie Wagner hit a three pointer to start the game, Kierstenn Aguilar had a nice driving basket, Emmerie Beyer scored inside, Brooklyn Klein had a steal and layup, and Anna Brakke hit a pair of freethrows all in the opening few minutes. Wagner later hit a pair of freethrows and another three pointer which knotted the game at 17-17 with just over 8 minutes to play. A few minutes later, Beyer also hit a pair of freethrows and a three pointer which gave South a 24-20 lead with 3 minutes to go before halftime. The Bruins defense was the story for most of the first half though. South had active hands and had numerous tipped passes and steals in their half court defensive battles. South had 10 steals in the opening half as their rotations and communication on that side of the court was very good. South took a 27-25 lead into halftime. However, in the second half, the Bruins had a tough time putting the ball in the basket. South missed their first 8 shots of the half on their way to a 12 percent shooting half. Kierstenn Aguilar hit a pull up baseline shot with 12 minutes left in the game to finally break the ice for South, and despite the poor shooting, the Bruin defense kept them in it, as that Aguilar basket made it just a 32-30 Spartan lead. The turnover bug then hit the Bruins again, as they had a really tough 2 minute stretch where they had 4 straight turnovers that led directly to Spartan points, the North had built a 40-30 lead with 10 minutes to go. The Bruins kept fighting though. Sami Hoselton sparked the Bruins with a driving basket and an offensive rebound putback basket to cut the lead to 40-36 with 7 minutes to go, but unfortunately for South, that would be their last basket of the game, and could only muster 2 more freethrows over the last 7 minutes and could not get any closer. Those 3 baskets by South were the only field goals of the half for the Bruins and the 11 point second half output was the difference in the game. Adie Wagner was the only Bruin in double figures with 13 points while Anna Brakke continued her solid work on the boards, grabbing a team high 9 rebounds. Next action for South is Tuesday when they host Grand Forks Central.
