Bruins stumble at Shanley

Another game of ups and downs for the Fargo South Bruins on Friday night. Despite committing 21 first half turnovers and giving up 22 offensive rebounds in the first half, South only trailed by an 18-15 score with 5 minutes to go before halftime, and it was only 20-15 with 2 minutes to go before half. South's initial defensive effort was solid, but as been the case all season long so far, lack of controlling their defensive boards led to big problems for the Bruins. The Deacons only scored on their first shot attempt a couple of times in the opening half, but were able to maintain the lead throughout by scoring on multiple chances on offense. On the flip side of the ball, Shanley's full court pressure caused too manySouth turnovers, which has been the second problem area for the Bruins all season. For South to be competitive, those 2 aspects of the game need to be cleaned up. Early on, the Bruins hung tough, as Emmerie Beyer and Adie Wagner combined for the first 11 points of the game for South, with Beyer knocking down a pair of threes and Wagner hitting a three and scoring on a fast break layup. A midrange shot by Anna Brakke and a nice driving shot by Sami Hoselton made it an 18-15 Deacon lead with 5 minutes to go in the opening half. The lead was 20-15 with 2 minutes to go before half, but the Bruins then surrendered a fast break layup, an uncontested three pointer, and another fast break layup right before halftime to allow Shanley to extend out to a 27-15 halftime lead. Adie Wagner hit another perimeter shot early in the second half, but that was South's only points in the opening 9 minutes of the second half as Shanley had a 34-2 run that went from the 5 minute mark of the first half to the 9 minute mark of the second half. South continued to play hard, but could not recover from that huge Shanley run and the result was a final score of 65-36. Adie Wagner led South with 13 points. Next action for the Bruin is Saturday, January 14 when they host Grand Forks Central in a game that is a reschedule from earlier in the season.
