After coming off a tough performance down in Wahpeton 48 hours earlier, Fargo South came out aggressive and played the Sheyenne Mustangs tough right up until the final 3 minutes of the game when Sheyenne got to the freethrow line late, including 3 three point plays to stretch the final score out to 61-43, but there were a lot of positives to take away from the game. South had a number of nice plays early, including a pair of baskets by Anna Brakke, who had probably her best game of the season, finishing with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Adie Wagner was also hot early, as she scored off a great pass from Emmerie Beyer on a press-breaker cut, and nailed a pair of three pointers, the second of which gave South a 14-13 lead with 8 minutes to go before halftime. The Bruins had a tough last minute or so of the first half with the turnover bug, and ended up trailing 25-18 at halftime. In a great sign though, the Bruins came out in the second half and really battled back hard. Brakke hit on a pair of driving baskets and Wagner hit her third three of the game to tie the game up at 25-25 with just over 2 minutes gone in the second half. Maggie Manson hit a three for the Mustangs to retake the lead at 28-25, but a driving basket by Beyer and Brooklyn Klein cut into the lead, and a Beyer three pointer gave South a 33-32 lead with 12 and a half minutes left to go. Sheyenne then scored on a pair of hoops to make it 36-33, and the score got stuck there for the Bruins. South had a number of chances to cut into the lead or even take the lead from the freethrow line, but South struggled from the line the entire night, going 8-22 on the game. That were definitely missed opportunities to put a little bit more pressure on Sheyenne, but the misses allowed the Mustangs to keep the lead and control. Sheyenne built up to a 40-35 lead, but another three pointer by Emmerie Beyer cut that to 40-38 with just under 6 minutes to go. Sheyenne then seized control of the game by going on a 10-2 run to lead 50-40. Anna Brakke scored on a driving layup after an offensive rebound on the second freethrow by Sami Hoselton to cut that lead to 50-43 with 3 minutes left, but that was as close as South would get. As mentioned above, the Mustangs had multiple three point plays late, and finished the game on an 11-0 run in the closing 2 and a half minutes. Wagner joined Brakke in double figure scoring with 11. Next action for South is Tuesday when they host West Fargo.
