New Look Bruins drop opener to Thief River Falls

It was a typical first game of the season for Fargo South on Friday night. There were some stretches of ragged play and some stretches of some nice things, but through it all, the new look Bruins competed hard over the whole game. South's first game of the season ended in a 57-39 loss to a TRF team who was playing their third game of the season and coming off a 27-4 season in 2016. South had the turnover bug in the first half, as many new faces for South began the adjustment period to varsity basketball, and turned it over 15 times in the half, mostly due to the Bruins going too fast on the offensive end. Despite the turnovers, South held a slim 6-4 lead 4 minutes into the game after Emmerie Beyer hit on 2 of her team high 18 points, but then the combination of not taking care of the ball by South and the hot shooting of Kylea Praska and offensive presence of Tiahna Nicholson allowed the Prowlers to go on a 23-8 run over the next 10 minutes of game action to take a 27-12 lead. South just didn't have an answer for the 6'3 post player who had 16 first half points and Thief River Falls pulled out to a 38-18 halftime lead. In the second half though, South started to get into a bit more of a rhythm. After allowing a pair of inside baskets to trail 44-20, the Bruins got a nice driving basket by Sami Hoselton and back to back three pointers by Emmerie Beyer, which was followed up a short time later by a three by Adie Wagner. South continued to scrap all game long, outscoring the Prowlers in the second half. Overall, it was a good way for a number of players to get their feet wet in varsity competition. One goal the Bruins have this year is to get better each game, and in the opener, things got better from one half to the next. Fewer turnovers, a little smoother action on offense, and a better defensive effort all were steps in the right direction. The Bruins bench helped out too in both minutes and stats as 9 different South players scored. Anna Brakke handled herself well inside, as she grabbed a team high 10 rebound and Brooklyn Klein played hard all game as well. South opens up conference play on Tuesday as they host West Fargo Sheyenne at 5:45.
