Tough second half leads to Bruin loss

After a back and forth first half, Fargo South could never get anything going in the second half, and the result was a 64-43 loss to the Valley City Hi-Liners on Tuesday night in the Bruin gym. In the opening half, the Bruins shot the ball well, but missed out on grabbing control of the game as they turned the ball over 13 times and gave up 13 offensive rebounds that led to 11 Hi-Liner points. So despite making 5 threes in the half and for the most part playing solid half court defense, the Bruins found themselves trailing 33-27 at halftime. South trailed 30-27 and had a chance to cut the lead to 1 or tie it up right before half, but a shot spun out and the Hi-Liners threw in a 40 footer right at the halftime buzzer to take that six point lead into the locker room. Valley had the ball to start the second half and hit a three on their first possession, so in just over 20 seconds of game action, where the lead could have been 1, it instead was 9 as the Bruins trailed 36-27. It stayed at about that same spread over the next few minutes and an Emmerie Beyer basket with 14:23 left in the game cut the lead to 11, but the Bruins would hit a huge basket drought from there, not getting another field goal until Adie Wagner hit a three pointer with 3 minutes to go in the game. That 11 minute field goal lapse would be the difference in the game. South was able to get to the free throw line during that stretch, but just could not get the ball to go in the hoop from the field. Compounding the problem, South had a tough stretch where mulitiple consecutive turnovers led to easy Valley City layup points. To their credit, the Bruins continued to play hard the entire game and had a few positives go their way. Anna Brakke had a career high in rebounds with 12, while Adie Wagner had a career high scoring night with 15 points to lead the Bruins, while Kierstenn Aguilar had another steady floor game. Next action for South is Thursday when they get on the bus for the first tme this season and head south to Wahpeton.
