Fargo South finally broke through into the win column, picking up their first win of the season on state-wide tv, posting a 60-56 win on the road in Valley City on Thursday night. The Bruins put 3 different players in double figures, led by the 21 points of 7th grader Adie Wagner. In the first half, South was able to get a number of good shots, but as has been the recent case, could not get the ball to drop in a consistent manner. Despite the cold shooting though, the Bruins defense played well and really the only issue was giving up a few too many offensive rebounds to the Hi-Liners, which allowed Valley to build a small 24-21 lead at halftime. In perhaps their best half of the season though, South cleaned up their defensive boards and found their rhythm on offense. Adie Wagner got hot from the perimeter, and 8th grader Paige Schroeder found the openings in the Hi-Liner zone, hitting a pair of elbow shots to push the Bruins ahead and South held a 9 point lead coming down the stretch. Valley City was not going to give up easily though, and cut the lead back to a single possession, but Kierstenn Aguilar hit 2 huge three pointers late in the game to keep the Hi-Liners at bay, and also knocked down 4-4 freethrows in the closing minute to ice the game and give South the long awaited victory. In addition to Wagner's 21 points, Aguilar had 17 points and Schroeder hit for 15. Next action for South is Saturday when they travel to Grand Forks Central in an East Region play-in game.
