South plays well in loss

Fargo South played the top team in the EDC tough on Friday night, but fell by a 78-62 score. The Bruins played with a lot of energy throught the opening half to keep the game close, but the Firebirds grabbed a number of offensive rebounds that led to putback baskets. Both teams pressured the ball hard throughout the half, and the Firebirds led 38-28 at halftime in an entertaining opening 18 minutes. South then opened up the second half with a freethrow and a three pointer to cut the lead to 38-32, and sliced into the lead even more as they trailed 40-36 with 15 minutes left, but unfortunately for the Bruins, South lost senior Sami Hoselton on the next possession for the season with a torn ACL injury. With the Bruins struggling to deal with that, the Firebirds went on a 10-0 run to push the lead out to 50-36 and looked to really take over the game. However South battled back hard over the next few minutes and cut the lead in half at 55-48 midway through the second half. From there the lead hovered around ten points until late in the game when the Firebirds were able to stretch the lead back out a little bit. A pair of 4 point possessions by Devils Lake in the second half kept the Firebirds with enough breathing room to keep South at bay for the remainder of the game. Adie Wagner led South with 27 points, followed by 18 points and 10 rebounds from Paige Schroeder, but all of the players for South contributed something positive for the Bruins. South plays their last regular season game next Thursday when they host Fargo North on senior night.
