Bruins knock off unbeaten Jamestown

With a tournament like atmosphere and the Bruins playing their fourth game in eight days as a backdrop, the top two ranked teams in North Dakota basketball played a hotly contested game right down to the wire Tuesday night in the Bruin gym. In the end, the home town Fargo South Bruins had just enough to get past top ranked Jamestown 51-49. Jamestown looked very sharp early on, scoring the first six points of the game and jumping out to a quick eight point lead in the first quarter before South could get their game legs under them. It was a lead that Jamestown would have for the first three quarters of the game. Both teams pressured the ball all over the gym and the intensity level rose throughout the game as every possession was a battle in itself. Tamar Elias helped the Bruin cause by scoring 10 first half points, while Jamestown countered with a three point barrage from the Steinborn twins. The score at half saw the Blue Jays holding a slim 27-26 lead. The same aggressive style of play continued in the second half as well. The first big break of the game appeared to go the way of Jamestown when Bruin point guard Lindsay Hewitt picked up her fourth foul midway through the third period, but reserve Lauren Petrick came off the bench and played very solid in Hewitt's absence. Senior Renae Whitford picked up the scoring slack in the second half also, when she drained three 3 pointers which propelled the Bruins into a lead they would not relinquish. Colee Silovich also knocked down a big three pointer with just over four minutes remaining in the game to give South their biggest lead of the game at 47-40, but Jamestown continued to claw their way back into the game, closing the gap in the final minutes, partly due to missed Bruin freethrows, to 51-49 with just under 20 seconds left. Jamestown had possession of the ball at the end, but a Kristi Kilander blocked shot at the buzzer saved the win for South. The win puts South all alone at the top of the EDC standings at 8-0, while Jamestown suffers its first loss of the year and falls to 6-1 in the EDC. The Bruins are now off until next Tuesday, when they travel to Grand Forks Red River to take on the Rough Riders.
