South wins third place game

Fargo South defeated Fargo North in the third place game of the East Region tournament Saturday night, which was also their third straight win., their longest winning steak since midway through the regular season. After struggling down the stretch of the season, the Bruins seemed to be re-peaking at just the right time, putting together 4 good games in the tournament. The Bruins played West Fargo right down to the wire, then blew out Grand Forks Central, and had tough wins over Shanley and North, two teams which had just beaten South in the last few games of the season. On Saturday night, the Bruins led nearly the entire game, jumping out to an early lead thanks to some hot shooting from everyone. The Bruins put up 18 first quarter points and led 18-10 at the first quarter break. That hot streak lasted the first two minutes of the second quarter also, as the Bruins pushed the lead up to 27-12 with just under six minutes remaining in the half. The Spartans though, would tighten up defensively for the rest of the half, holding the Bruins to just one more point before the halftime break, and clawd back to within four at 28-24 at half. The second half though, saw the Bruins steadily build the lead up, and they were never really in danger of losing after halftime. South again put three players in double figures, led by Renae Whitford's 14 points, followed closely by Tamar Elias and Kristi Kilander, both with 13. Fargo South will play the final game of Thursday night's opening round at the state tournament, when they will take on perennial power Mandan. South defeated Mandan in the first game of the year for both teams on a last second shot.
