Packers knock off Bruins
The defending state champs weren't quite ready to throw in the towel on the season just yet, despite a 6-9 record one week ago. Since then, the Packers have knocked off the top two teams in the state and are much improved from a month ago when the Bruins rolled to a 28 point win in West Fargo. Thursday nights matchup was a different story. While South was battling the emotions of losing their starting point guard, the Packers were just getting adjusted to losing theirs. The first half saw a back and forth battle where West Fargo held leads of two points at the quarter and halftime break. Kristi Kilander led the charge for South in the first half, scoring 13 first half points and staying out of the foul trouble that plagued the center in Jamestown. In the third quarter, the Bruins started things off with two perimeter jumpers by Renae Whitford, but had trouble connecting from the outside after that. The Bruins scrappy play in that quarter pulled them into a tie, 39-39 heading into the final frame. It would be West Fargo however, that would begin to pull away in the fourth quarter. The Packers built a lead of 48-44 and South had numerous chances to cut into that lead, but couldn't convert on the offensive end. As the clock began to get under three minutes and the Pack still holding a six point lead and running a very patient offense, the Bruins were forced to foul. Junior Amanda Krenz hit 8 of 8 in the fourth quarter and the Packers as a team went 12-14 to close things out. The Bruins would get no closer. A three pointer at the buzzer for West Fargo pushed the final margin to 61-46, the Bruins worst defeat of the year. The loss drops South to 15-2 in the EDC. Next action for South is Tuesday night when they host their crosstown rival North at the Bruin gym.
